Backups are the last line of defence. When a site is compromised, a server fails or an update breaks something, a clean backup is the difference between minutes of downtime and weeks of lost business.
We include automated daily backups in our Ongoing Maintenance plans, stored off-site and tested regularly.
A complete backup includes the database, all files, uploaded media, configuration files and any custom code. Partial backups leave you rebuilding from scratch.
Store backups in a separate location from your hosting. If the host is compromised or fails, your backups should still be accessible. Use a dedicated cloud storage service with encryption at rest.
Daily backups are the standard for business sites. High-transaction ecommerce sites may need hourly backups. Weekly backups are acceptable only for small static sites that rarely change.
A backup that does not restore is worthless. Test restoring from a backup every month. Time the process, note any issues and fix them before you need the backup in an emergency.
Critical security patches should be applied within 24 hours. A full monthly review of content, backups, speed and uptime is the standard for most business sites. High-traffic sites may need weekly attention.
