A supplemental feed adds or updates data in your existing product feed without replacing it. It is a practical way to fill gaps, override attributes or add seasonal data when changing the primary feed is slow or out of your control.
We use supplemental feeds within our Google Merchant Centre service.
A supplemental feed joins your primary feed by matching on the product ID. It does not stand alone. Instead it layers extra data onto products that already exist, adding attributes or overriding values.
Supplemental feeds suit jobs where the primary feed is hard to change quickly or where you need a temporary or partial update across specific products.
Both adjust data without touching the source, but they fit different jobs. Feed rules transform data on import, while a supplemental feed supplies new values, often from a spreadsheet you control.
| Need | Better tool |
|---|---|
| Map or transform existing data | Feed rule |
| Add new values from a list | Supplemental feed |
| Temporary promotional overrides | Supplemental feed |
A supplemental feed is a patch, not a replacement. Use it for genuine additions and overrides, but fix lasting data problems in the primary feed so every product stays consistent.
Match the supplemental feed on the exact product ID used in your primary feed. A mismatched ID means the extra data never attaches to the product.
This service covers the Merchant Centre feed and product data layer: setup, optimisation, feed rules and disapprovals. Campaign bidding and structure sit with our Google Shopping management. The two work best together.
